The 118th annual Strath Taieri A&P Show has been cancelled in a bid to help stop the spread of Covid-19.

Show secretary Michelle Tisdall said the show would have attracted more than 500 people in Middlemarch on Saturday.

“We have come to the unfortunate conclusion that the show needs to be cancelled.”

On Monday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said gatherings of more than 500 people should be cancelled to combat the Covid-19 outbreak.

Mrs Tisdall, of Middlemarch, said the decision to cancel had not been easy.

“But in light of the events happening worldwide, we believe this is the most responsible choice. For all of you that are involved, we appreciate all of the efforts you have put forth to help get the show going .. “Keeping our Middlemarch community safe is our main priority.”

The show was set to feature nearly 50 stalls and events including a couple-carrying race and a musterers’ race.
