Helping hospice fund “gap”

Otago Community Hospice chief executive Ginny Green receives an early Christmas present from Otago Community Hospice Charity Cruise & Car Show organiser Ken Schumacher (left) and logistics manager Nathan Baker outside the hospice in North East Valley on Tuesday. Behind them is a 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8.

Mr Schumacher said the $6850 raised for the hospice at the show in St Kilda last month set a new record “by nearly $2000”.

The amount of money was bolstered by a record 250 vehicles, beautiful weather and the great new venue at Hancock Park.

The event celebrated its 10th anniversary this year and had the potential to become as big as the Whangamata Beach Hop on the Coromandel, Mr Schumacher said.

Ms Green said the money would help the hospice “bridge the gap” between its Southern District Health Board contract funding and its operating costs.

“We have to raise $2.5 million a year to keep running, so it’s very important.”
