About 60 people get a close-up look at the Takitakitoa Wetland, on the lower Taieri on Sunday. The Otago Fish & Game Council guided tour aimed to showcase one of the organisation’s biggest wetland restoration projects and coincided with international World Wetlands Day, Fish & Game officer Nigel Pacey said. Using a low dam, 32ha of marginal low-lying farmland was reflooded with water in 2015, creating a habitat for a variety of bird and fish life, including some declining native species like eel and whitebait. The project was financed by a grant from the Gamebird Habitat Trust which gets its funding from a levy on duck-shooter licences. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
