Jazz singer Karin Reid returns to Dunedin from Wellington, and joins forces with guitarist Alex Wolken, for a low-key five-date mini summer tour over the festive season.
Entitled Outside the Jazz Oeuvrewill visit Reid’s favourite venues in and around Dunedin.
The tour kicks off tonight in the city centre, with a jazz in the Pocket session at the Dog With Two Tails, where Reid and Wolken will have their first foray into working together with the songs.
The tour will also take in the Inch Bar (December 22, 4pm), Arc Brewing Co in Warrington (December 28, 5pm), Gallery on Blueskin in Waitati (January 3, 7pm), and will conclude at The Galley in Port Chalmers (January 5, 3pm).
All gigs are free, except January 3, which will be entry by koha. It is fitting that the tour will culminate in Port Chalmers, where Reid lived for 20 years before relocating to Wellington’s jazz scene three months ago. For the mini-tour, Reid and Wolken have crafted a show that features songs from the jazz canon, as well as other popular genres.
The performances will range from the jazz standards of Miles Davis and John Coltrane to the indie-rock sensibilities of PJ Harvey to the groovy late 1960s folk of David Bowie.
Although unsure how the concept will turn out, since the duo are living on different islands, they have been discussing ideas to bring to the musical table.
Reid said the shows would feature “predominantly a fresh programme of songs for audiences, and we hope it will be a mellow and melodic vibe”.
