The Dunedin City Council is investigating installing a path for pedestrians between Westwood and Ocean View.

At the latest Saddle Hill Community Board meeting, board chairman Scott Weatherall asked council transport group manager Richard Saunders to investigate the installation of a “safe walkway” in Brighton Rd, to link Westwood and Ocean View.

Pedestrians travelling between the suburbs were forced to walk on the road, he said.

Mr Saunders said he would prefer a path being installed on the side of the road closest to the sea because more land was available there.

He doubted the work to install the path would be “hugely technical” or expensive.

“We would see it more as a formed shoulder than a kerb and channel and path.”

He would check if the stretch of road was due for resealing.

“While the contractors are there they can take the time to try and form a bit of a shoulder.”
