A day of collecting rubbish strewn around Lake Mahinerangi was launched after removing a “ute from the drink”.
Jesse Wilson, a member of Mudboggers, the Otago and Southland 4WD group, said the group’s inaugural Lake Mahinerangi Clean Up event was held on Saturday, July 29.
The idea for the event came after group members helped recover a ute in the lake on June 29.
“While we were up there helping getting the ute out of the drink, we noticed a lot of beer bottles and rubbish up there. So we did something about it.”
On Saturday, four members filled a trailer with rubbish and paid to dump it.
Mudboggers holds monthly 4WD events, encouraging anyone with basic 4WD gear to join in, as they travel around tracks in the lower South Island.
At the clean-up event, the Mudboggers were disappointed to see public areas damaged by vehicles.
“We encourage people to join in with us rather than damaging the public camping and picnic grounds.”
