Six Otago softball players will get a taste of the international game after being selected in International Softball Academy (ISA) teams.
Zillah Conder, Kaitlyn Hastie, Annelies MacDuff and Callum Rowley will represent the ISA New Zealand under-15 girls’ and boys’ teams respectively, while Maeve Witchell and Nathaniel Wallace-Neil will step up for the under-17 girls’ and boys’ teams.
The ISA hosts international softball tours and academy programmes that expose players to elite softball and elite coaching.
Nathaniel’s team will embark on a 25-day tour of America, Canada and Australia in June and July while the other teams will compete in Sydney.
Zillah, an Otago Girls’ High School pupil, said she was looking forward to the trip, especially learning new skills and “building up my skills as a fielder and batter”.
She will spend the first couple of days training with the team, which will then compete two one-day tournaments as well as a three-day tournament while in Australia.
Kaitlyn and Callum, who are both pitchers, were also selected in the under-15 developing sox girls’ and boys’ squads respectively after their stand-out performances at a tournament earlier in the year.
They will attend two training camps this year before an Emerging Sox tour next year.
Kaitlyn will attend her first training camp this weekendlater in the month.
Kaitlyn said she was looking forward to the training camp, which would focus on fitness, batting and fielding.
