Two Dunedin footballers have been selected to wear the silver fern later on in the year.

Jade Middleditch (17) and Mikayla Gray (16) were named in the New Zealand secondary school U18 football team which will travel to Singapore to play local teams in September.

The pair, who play club football for Dunedin Technical AFC, were selected for the team following their performances at a tournament in Auckland earlier this year.

Jade, who made a national secondary school team in 2014, said she was excited to be part of the team again and was looking forward to the challenge of competing against teams from another country.

“It would be good to see how the girls over in Singapore play.”

The goalkeeper said the competition would be a good experience for her and Mikayla.

The pair play twice a week, once for the Dunedin Technical AFC premier women’s team and once for their school teams. Jade goes to OGHS and Mikayla is a pupil at Columba College.

Mikayla, who plays right wing, was surprised but pleased to be named in the national team.

It was her first time with a national team and she hoped it would be a stepping stone towards the national U20 side.
