Captain’s Run

The Southern Steel is in the midst of defending its ANZ Premiership title. Team captains Gina Crampton (top) and Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit chat about their season.

The Steel beat the Pulse 62-52 on Monday night and will play the Tactix on Wednesday.

What is your goal for the season?

We would love to win another premiership, but know it will be a tough road ahead.

Are you pleased with how the team has performed so far?

Generally pretty happy. We know there are many areas we can improve in and that we will need to step up when it comes to the last few games if we want to secure a finals spot.

How does the team split its time between Invercargill and Dunedin?

Usually the rule is if we play in Invercargill, we train in Dunedin that week and vice versa. But as our main sponsors are in Invercargill, we spend most of our time there.

The Netball World Cup will be held this year. Does that affect the way you approach the season?

Not at all. Not as a team, anyway.

Who has been your toughest opponent?

Pulse. They’re pretty slick.

Who is your all-time favourite player?

Te Huinga: Sharelle McMahon.

Gina: Te Paea [Selby-Rickit].
