Work is well under way on the first new facility at SPCA Otago’s Opoho site, chief executive Sophie McSkimming says.

The rebuild of the education and office building was making progress, and the frame was now under construction, Ms McSkimming said.

The first building was expected to be completed by mid-July, and demolition and construction of the dog facility were set to soon follow.

During the rebuild of the dog and cat facilities, the organisation’s volunteer fosterers would need to step up to temporarily house the animals, she said.

The dog block would be rebuilt first, followed by the cat building – which the SPCA Otago team hoped to have completed before the busy kitten season later this year, she said.

More than $100,000 was still needed to complete the project.

A fundraising evening at the Golden Centre Mall on July 21 was set to bring in a fair amount of cash for the project. Tickets for the event cost $150 and all proceeds would go to SPCA Otago, Ms McSkimming said.
