Securing British pop musician Ed Sheeran to perform in Dunedin next year took more than six months’ work, Dunedin Venues (DVML) marketing manager Kim Barnes says.

The “unbelievable” response on social media by Wednesday morning showed the enthusiasm for the I See Fire singer, she said.

“It’s such a coup [for Dunedin].”

Speculation and hints on social media of Sheeran’s appearance had left many Dunedin residents “thinking out loud” earlier this week. Sheeran announced two New Zealand shows early yesterday.

Forsyth Barr Stadium will host the multi-award-winning artist on March 29. His only other New Zealand concert will be at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium on March 24.

Ms Barnes said the show would be “bigger than Fleetwood Mac”, which drew an audience of 35,000 in 2015.
