After 19 years at the school, Pine Hill School principal Mel Jewiss is moving on.
Mrs Jewiss started at the school as a beginner teacher, becoming principal in 2007.
She will officially finish on July 23, the last day of the term two holidays, before starting as the principal at Portobello School in term three.
Mrs Jewiss said she was looking forward to the challenge of a new position but would miss the Pine Hill community.
“I will miss seeing the faces of the children I have taught over the years and having past children [and] families pop in to visit.”
She would have happily stayed at the school if the position at Portobello School did not come up, but said principal positions were few and far between in Dunedin.
“The children who come to this school are very lucky to learn in such a great environment with great resources and great staff.”
When the opportunity for something new came up, she decided to take it.
“[Portobello School is] still a smaller community school which is part of the appeal of going there.
“Obviously, it’s a different community and .. a very different environment and location to Pine Hill.”
She was looking forward to working with children, families and staff at Portobello School.
Members of the Pine Hill community had been “really supportive” since she announced she was leaving and had wished her well.
“Change is good. It will be a new challenge for me.”
