New electric car charger ‘exciting’

This week is ‘‘Drive Electric Week’’ and local electric vehicle owners are touting the vehicles’ benefits.
Dunedin man Paul Jones, who purchased an electric vehicle in December last year, said there were significant benefits.
‘‘They are cleaner, they are quicker and cheaper.’’
Electric vehicles include fully battery powered vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles which combine an electric battery cell with a fuel engine.
A further development this ‘‘Drive Electric Week’’ has been the launch of an electric vehicle charger at the Great King St car park building.
The new charger is a joint project between the Dunedin City Council and the Otago Chamber of Commerce.
Otago Chamber of Commerce chief executive Dougal McGowan said the charger was an exciting initiative and one the chamber was happy to support.
‘‘We know companies are continually looking at their costs and the benefits of how they do business. There are already Dunedin businesses that are using electric vehicles to good effect around town.’’
The charger at the Great King St car park follows Delta’s installation of a rapid charger at the Filleul St car park earlier this year.
