Vinyl records, a special shoehorn, VHS videos and paintings are just some of the items in the eclectic collection of goods for sale in today’s Anything But Books Sale at the Regent Theatre.
Last year’s fundraising sale made a record $13,000 profit, sale convener Kath Wallace said.
While organisers would like sales to be a “wee bit better” than last year, there was no fixed fundraising target, she said.
Whatever money was made from the event, held on Friday, March 10, would go into refurbishing the theatre.
Prices would be listed on all items but staff were also open to “a little bit of haggling” from bargain hunters.
It was interesting to observe the patterns of students who patronised the event.
“We really enjoy watching the students.”
Board games had been popular for some of these customers at last year’s event.
“Last year they made a beeline for the games.”
One curious item for sale is a large shoehorn made by Spanish fashion designer Manolo Blahnik, which Mrs Wallace said looked like “an evil medical instrument”.
Star Trek fans will be well catered for with an array of DVDs, VHS videos and blueprints for the Starship Enterprise all for sale.
Music would be played during the sale by local performers including jazz musician Calder Prescott.
About 12 volunteers, including Mrs Wallace, have been helping to sort through the collection of items for sale. It was quite a big job but enjoyable, she said.
The sale runs from noon to 8pm today (March 10).
