What was your reaction to being named the Hotel Industry Food and Beverage Employee of the Year at the 2019 NZ Hotel Industry Awards in Auckland last week?
I was so happy.
How many years have you worked for Scenic Hotel in Dunedin?
What is a busy day for you?
A 3am start to feed up to 280 diners. You have to be organised or it could be a daunting task. A busy day is challenging. Difficult guests are also challenging – some people get up on the wrong side of the bed – but it’s my job to make them happy and it’s rewarding when you make it right. I can make a rude person mellow and ensure everyone is happy, getting good service, good food and feeling welcome.
Did those skills come naturally?
As a girl I used to work for my parents in the Philippines and I was so shy – I couldn’t talk to people – but I grew in confidence as I got older.
Who are some of the famous people you’ve served in Dunedin?
Joe Cocker, Kiri Te Kanawa and the All Blacks have stayed here, but to me everyone is an important VIP guest.
