Cafe to add to suburb’s budding coffee scene

The opening of a new cafe in Brighton next month will add to the beachside suburb’s fledgling coffee scene.

Azizah Steel, owner of the Brighton Store for the past 12 years, will open the new cafe, Brighton Kitchen, in Brighton Rd.

Options for Brighton’s coffee fans also increased when Andrew Barr and his partner, Hannah Gray, opened the Artisan State coffee cart in the front yard of their Brighton Rd home last August.

The pair moved to Dunedin from Wellington earlier last year.

Artisan State had helped foster community connections, Mr Barr said.

“We’ve found that there’s people that have lived here for eight to 10 years and they haven’t met as many people as they’ve met since we’ve been open.”

Miss Steel said she first had the idea of opening a cafe in Brighton Rd eight years ago.

Her daughter, Aslina, who had helped her mother set up the cafe, said until recently there had not been the demand for a new cafe but that had changed.

“Now Brighton’s growing and a lot more people are coming out here, so it’s the right time.”

Saddle Hill Community Board chairman and Brighton resident Scott Weatherall said visitors to Brighton had been asking for more coffee options for a long time.

The prospect of having a new cafe in Brighton was “exciting”, he said.
