Armload of trophies in Gore


Dunedin singer-songwriter Jean Barkman “fantastic” weekend in Gore, walking away with an armload of trophies from the New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards.

Competing in the 60-plus section, Barkman (67) won the vocal solo and gospel categories, and was named overall winner of the 60-plus section.

“It was wonderful to get to perform with such great musicians, and it was a lovely to win those prizes,” she said.

A lifelong songwriter and performer, and a member of both the Dunedin Folk Club and the Silver Peaks Country Music Club, Barkman has taken part in the Gold Guitar Awards in several previous years. She won the 60-plus section in 2013, and has won multiple other awards.

Barkman paid tribute to the organisers of the Gold Guitar Awards for the enormous amount of effort they put into staging the event every year.

“They do a stupendous job – it is a fantastic event.”
